When you feel highly sensitive, retreating into your personal sanctum can give you an opportunity to relax and refresh yourself. Time spent alone in the comfort of your home allows you to recover from over-stimulation and quiet your mind. You won’t have to brace yourself against an omnipresent tide of sights, sounds, scents, and emotional triggers. You can exercise full control over your environment and the tension in your mind and body will be able to freely drain away. Retreating from the world today—even for just a few moments—will give you the time and serenity that you need. ~ DailyOm.com 12/23/14

Teenage girl praying outdoors at twilight. Shallow DOF.I couldn’t have said it better myself!

As an only child, I am already attuned to the beat of my own drum; and quiet as it’s kept, I often prefer it. I’m an extroverted introvert, and I can play life grand or small with equal ease. Sometimes I lovingly withdraw within myself. But on other occasions, there are times when the world, my world is too loud, too demanding … too much and I retreat! In those moments, my nest feels more like a bunker than an ashram. And I can lock myself in.

This DailyOm.com message, however, reminds me that it’s okay to call “time out” and spend some quality “me” time in the comfort of my familiar, my cocoon, my world. It’s all about intention and perspective. Instead of conjuring the energy of a white flag-waving retreat, I can summon the energy of self-care, self-love and create a loving space of self-renewal.

The end of another year is fast approaching. But instead of creating a laundry list of resolutions, I RESOLVE to relax, relate and …. RETREAT!

Be well … & WISE!

“Sometimes our lives contract before they expand. We may be working hard on ourselves spiritually, doing good in the world, following our dreams, and wondering why we are still facing constrictions of all kinds—financial, emotional, physical. Perhaps we even feel as if we’ve lost our spirituality and are stuck in a dark room with no windows. We may be confused and discouraged by what appears to be a lack of progress. But sometimes this is the way things work. Like a caterpillar that confines itself to a tiny cocoon before it grows wings and flies, we are experiencing the darkness before the dawn.”

Madisyn Taylor, DailyOm.com

womanonadockThe old adage it’s always darkest before the dawn is as true for daybreak as it is for the moments before we experience the miracle we’ve been hoping and praying for. Madisyn’s message is particularly poignant and profound as so many are “working through” and “going through” at this point in time.

Fear and uncertainty has a way of causing us to freeze and constrict, physiologically as well as emotionally and mentally. It’s a primal response, in fact (think deer in headlights). But if we can remind ourselves of the power and wisdom of surrender, we can relax enough to appreciate not only the process of transition but the promise of transformation that awaits if we allow enough room for life – in all of messy marvelousness – to unfold in the fullness of divine time.

So today, consider the wisdom in, and blessing of, contracting inward before you expand. And be sure to read the rest of Madisyn’s message. Her wise words remind us that “it is a natural part of being that our lives sometimes contract before expanding”.

“Solitude is a refuge in which you can work through distressing thoughts and recharge your spirit. When you are alone, you are free to fully experience your thoughts and emotions. You can use your energy to delve more deeply into your inner self and understand what you are going through. When you spend time in solitude, there are few distractions to get in the way of your desire to concentrate on your needs and regain your equilibrium. Yours is the only voice you will be called upon to heed, and you can use your time engaging in activities that you find elevating and spiritually fulfilling. Embracing solitude today will help you understand your feelings and lift your spirit.”

The Daily Om – 12/29/12 “Alone with Yourself”

The Daily Om has been on a serious roll with its messages about the benefits of “me” time for those like me of the Leo persuasion. I am generally more withdrawn, quiet and pensive during these final days of any given year. But this year the draw inward seems particularly acute and the push from external circumstances beyond my control or understanding have led me to a self-imposed and well deserved timeout.

The yearning to envelop myself with peace and stillness in the midst of all the issues, concerns, demands, disappointments and to-dos swirling around me is a call to which I surrender gratefully. And the reason is simple. Quite frankly, I’m tired! Well, actually, the better way to phrase it is I desire rest. The type of rest found only in solitude with me, myself and I.
