“All the buried seeds crack open in the dark the instant they surrender to a process they can’t see. .. As a seed buried in the earth cannot imagine itself as an orchid or hyacinth, neither can a heart packed with hurt imagine itself loved or at peace. The courage of the seed is that once cracking, it cracks all the way.”

~ Mark Nepo, The Book of Awakening (4/5) ~

Girl Holding PlantWhat a lovely reminder about the spiritual lessons found in nature!

We are surrounded by living wisdom teachers that demonstrate to us how to live fearlessly and faithfully. Their example is a divine testament about how to yield to a spiritual process that cracks us wide open so that we can spring forth from the perceived limits of our current situation and grow into the fullness of the divine being we were created to be and already are.

And Mark’s words also remind us that so much of our potential is actualized in the darkness and just beneath the surface.

And so it seems surrender and courage go hand in hand. It takes courage to surrender. And it takes full surrender to “the process'” — often without knowing the plan or purpose of what we are going through in the moment — to truly grow, to break ground, to see the light and to “be ye transformed”.

The idea of surrendering to a process I cannot see brings to mind how I stumble aimlessly through the darkness in the middle of the night to make my way to the kitchen for water. The idea also creates a bit of anxiety because I’m not exactly a fan of not knowing precisely where I am going or not being able to control the beginning, end and everything in between.

You see, I’m a planner. Sometimes that finely honed skill serves me well … as long as everything goes according to … you guessed it … the “PLAN”. But that’s the thing about planning. When it’s about God’s plan, at my best I see through the glass darkly. I don’t know what I don’t know! And so often the lesson must be learned before the purpose is revealed. Selah.

As co-creators of our experiences we can and should prepare, of course.  But if we are really to be transformed into the fullness of who the Divine created each of us to be, our preparations are best made when they serve the Creator’s ultimate purpose and plan. The first step toward that end usually happens in the midst of darkness and requires us to surrender to the unknown with great expectation.

So when you feel the crack beginning and suddenly you are broken open, when you’re feeling most vulnerable, alone and scared know that the crack is there for a reason. Trust this divine process. Through those cracks of your tough outer exterior is often how the light of God can shine through.

Be well … & WISE!
